IT HAPPENED SO FAST. “Do we turn around, climb higher, or keep going?”

We were climbing San Gorgonio last week, the tallest mountain in So Cal. We had the correct gear and were prepared to stay overnight.

We hit High Camp at 6 PM and decided to set up camp. Safety is our primary concern and we knew we couldn’t get to the top before sunset.

The next morning, we woke to great conditions. So we grabbed our gear and set off.

About halfway from camp to the summit, we were crossing the snowfield when my partner and I both felt uneasy. Looking out, we realized that conditions were shifting, and we could very well be in a slide zone.

We assessed the situation. My partner wanted to climb higher. I needed to stay focused and go forward. We stayed together and carefully kept moving, discussing steps along the way.

I’ve been climbing and route finding for years, and I learned two very important lessons long ago when it comes to facing obstacles.

1) DO NOT OVERTHINK. When faced with obstacles, our fear and/or ego can get in the way, and we overthink as a result. Overthinking and analyzing leads to paralysis analysis. You become swallowed by the problem and don’t move at all. That leads to #2…

2) COMPLACENCY WILL KILL YOU and your goals. It only takes one misstep, or one moment of not paying attention, for things to fall apart. Being complacent to what’s happening around you, within your environment, can lead to destruction. Awareness is key. Pay attention. Assess, evaluate, and GO.

I took this video once I was safe.

A reminder to problem solve in a way that works for you. How you do it may not be how others choose to, and that’s ok.

LESSON: Don’t stay stuck. There’s always a way out. It’s that simple.

Welcome! Community is 🔑 and I’m so happy you’re here.

The older I get (I’m 50!), the more I see there are these mountains in life that we choose to face and climb. Sure, our mountains look hard. Maybe dangerous. Ok, fine.. Avalanche possibilities? Yes. Rock slides? I’ve seen and heard a few in my time.

But to me, what’s more dangerous than anything is turning away from the hard, and becoming complacent in life. Becoming complacent and “safe” while setting aside your dreams, goals, and gifts.. Becoming complacent and choosing to not climb life’s mountains out of fear, or lack of self belief.

Remember, you will never see this incredible view from the bottom of any mountain. Whatever that mountain is that you’re facing in life. This is why we choose to climb.. This is why we move forward, even when it’s hard.

YOU’VE GOT THIS! I believe in you.

HUMANS HAVE, what I call, A SECOND TONGUE. It’s used when speaking about others to another, and it carries less (and many times, zero..) weight.

When you’re in this space, you’ll only get truth, inspiration, and hope. ONE TONGUE, speaking the same three values I’ve walked in my entire life.

So if you’re new here, welcome! And if you’ve been here for a while, please tag your friends in the comments and let’s share this space.
